When buying an etching press, consider the following:
• Are the rollers made from steel and brightly polished?
• Does the bed roll out smoothly on bearings?
• Is the control wheel geared, affording a fluent motion?
• Do roller adjustment screws operate in unison to maintain alignment?
• Is the bed rack-driven?   (Friction-driven beds are subject to slippage)

BILL  RITCHIE'S  VISION

The year was 2004 when Kughler received a call from Bill Ritchie, a Seattle artist and retired university professor of printmaking. He wanted to have an etching press built with a 24" wide bed. Bill further explained that he wanted to clad the steel frame with hardwood, giving it a beautiful appearance. After the metal fabrication by Kughler and the wood finishing by Bill Ritchie, Kughler produced a new press having a 6" wide bed, to which Bill added a wood base. Bill demonstrated his new press at parks and artist's supply outlets, set up a workshop for wood-finishing and assembly, and sold dozens of these small hand-crafted presses to local printmakers. Bill launched a website and produced countless videos. Kughler developed a total of five sizes of presses, adding features including synchronized roller adjustment screws, rack-driven bed, and gear reduction. Hundreds of these etching presses were sold in eighteen countries. Many of the new owners submitted glowing testimonials. A thriving business, Emeralda Works, had been established and Bill's dream of offering a small etching press to the printmaking community had been achieved. After Bill did the wood finishing on the first one hundred presses, Kughler began producing the entire press while Bill did the marketing and selling. Bill has again moved on and is now devoting his efforts to fulfilling another ambitious dream, the establishment of an International Print Center & Incubators in Seattle. For information, email (ritchie@seanet.com). We wish Bill every success with his latest endeavor.

Kughler Enterprises Inc. now offers our line of etching presses directly to printmakers worldwide.
